The Challenge

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) identified the critical role of Track Force Protection Coordinators (TFPCs) in ensuring the safety of rail workers. To enhance safety practices and decision-making skills among TFPCs, ARTC sought a custom eLearning solution. The objective was to upskill TFPCs in judgement and decision-making processes to ensure optimal safety outcomes in all aspects of their roles.

The Creative Approach

Poncho eLearning collaborated closely with ARTC subject matter experts to develop an innovative eLearning program. Central to the solution was an interactive “choose-your-own-adventure” video format, offering learners a realistic simulation of a TFPC’s daily responsibilities. Shot using real track workers, the interactive video guided learners through various scenarios, including planning, pre-work meetings, adapting to changing job conditions, team engagement, applying protection measures, and communication. At critical decision points, learners were presented with choices, allowing them to practise decision-making in a safe and controlled environment.

The Training Outcome

The implementation of the custom eLearning solution yielded exceptional results for ARTC. Participants overwhelmingly praised the program, citing its interest, enjoyment, and relatability. The interactive decision-making format provided learners with a practical mechanism to hone their skills, resonating positively with their training experience. The program’s success was further affirmed by its recognition in the Australian Institute of Training and Development awards, where it won the prestigious “Best Use of Gamification/Simulation” category in 2022. ARTC achieved its objective of enhancing safety practices and decision-making skills among TFPCs, contributing to a safer work environment for rail workers nationwide.
