The Challenge
The Pharmaceuticals Society of Australia (PSA), in collaboration with the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO), recognized the imperative to enhance pharmacist education on Aboriginal health and culture. With a shared goal of improving healthcare outcomes for First Nations peoples, PSA and NACCHO sought to develop a customised eLearning program. This initiative aimed to equip pharmacists working in Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations with the knowledge and cultural understanding necessary to provide culturally sensitive and effective care.
The Creative Approach
Poncho eLearning embarked on a comprehensive initiative, engaging with PSA and NACCHO subject matter experts, pharmacists, and First Nations people to design and develop a multifaceted eLearning solution. Poncho conducted extensive video shoots across Australia, spanning four states and including visits to remote communities. These shoots captured insights from subject matter experts and First Nations individuals, which were expertly produced and integrated into the eLearning modules. Animated segments provided immersive reflections on the experiences of First Nations people, while interactive slides and activities offered detailed insights into prevalent health conditions within Aboriginal communities. The program emphasised the role of pharmacists in improving healthcare access and provided guidance on culturally appropriate care delivery.
The Training Outcome
The implementation of the custom eLearning solution exceeded expectations on multiple fronts. The final suite of products proved highly engaging and impactful, surpassing both PSA’s and NACCHO’s quality standards. Enrollments soared, with PSA experiencing a tenfold increase in projected enrollments within the first year alone. Additionally, the program received recognition as a finalist in the Australian Institute of Training and Development Excellence Awards, affirming its excellence and contribution to advancing cultural competency in pharmacy care for Aboriginal communities.
